About Us

Our Rich History

Welcome to Stockton Stage Society!

We were formed all the way back in 1920, over 100 years ago, and have been a stalwart in the local amateur dramatics scene ever since, growing in popularity exponentially.

Our first show, as you will see on this page, was The Yeomen of the Guard, a comedic operatic show establishing the eleventh collaboration between Arthur Sullivan and W S Gilbert.

As mentioned, Stockton Stage Society’s rich history dates back over 100 years, and the shows in the modern day still attract regular and new members of all ages to both watch and perform.

The Society now aims to put on a show in the March of every year at the Forum Theatre in Billingham, having changed venues from the original Stockton Hippodrome in the early 1970s.

Throughout the years of operation, Stockton Stage Society have overcome many challenges and learned to work with, at times, limited resources, using various tools and strategies.

Utilising local talent, the society has produced shows ranging from ‘Brigadoon’ in the early years with a simple set and huge cast, all the way to 2019 and the more recent shows such as ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ with a spectacular and colourful set and brilliant costumes.

The daunting drama that COVID-19 caused then created a struggle for the Society, meaning they had to cut down their show’s running time during the My Fair Lady show.

All in all, the society continues to power through challenges and hopes to continue into the future with the same level of talent.

They hop aboard a battered old tour bus, which they aptly nickname Priscilla, the Queen of the Desert, and go searching for love and friendship.

Instead, they end up finding more than they could have ever imagined…

With a dazzling array of outrageous Olivier and Tony award-winning costumes and a hit parade of dance floor favourites including:

“It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls
